Worldcoin is a digital identity and payments network built around the idea of “proof of personhood” — a cryptographic way to prove that an account belongs to a real, unique human being without revealing who that person is. The project issues a native token, WLD, on the Ethereum-linked Optimism network, and pairs it with a biometric verification device called the Orb and a companion smartphone application now called World App. At the time of writing, WLD trades at roughly $0.3701, with a circulating market capitalization of about $1,343,879,113, ranking it around #61 among all cryptocurrencies by market cap, and a 24-hour trading volume near $126,796,067.
The core problem Worldcoin tries to solve is the growing difficulty of distinguishing humans from bots and AI-driven agents online. As generative AI systems become more capable of mimicking human behavior, text, and even video, the project’s founders argue that the internet needs a trustworthy, privacy-preserving way to verify “unique humanness” — both to prevent fraud, Sybil attacks, and bot farms, and potentially to underpin systems such as fair distribution of resources (e.g., a hypothetical universal basic income) in an increasingly automated economy.
Worldcoin was conceived in 2019 by Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, together with physicist and entrepreneur Alex Blania and Max Novendstern. The trio founded a company called Tools for Humanity to build the technology and hardware behind the project, headquartered in San Francisco and Berlin. Development proceeded largely in private for several years, with the company running biometric-collection pilots in numerous countries before a public launch.
The project publicly launched its token and World ID system on July 24, 2023, unveiling the Orb device and opening sign-ups in dozens of countries simultaneously. The launch immediately attracted global attention both for its ambition and for the scale of personal biometric data it proposed to collect. In 2025, the ecosystem underwent a rebrand: the broader protocol and app were renamed World Network (or simply “World”), while WLD remained the ticker for the native token, and Tools for Humanity continued as the primary corporate steward of the technology alongside a nonprofit-oriented Worldcoin Foundation intended to eventually decentralize governance of the protocol.
At the center of Worldcoin’s technology is the Orb, a chrome-plated spherical device equipped with cameras and specialized optics designed to scan a person’s iris. The iris scan is converted into a unique numerical code (an “iris code”), and the system checks this code against previously registered codes to confirm the individual has not already verified an account — without needing to store a copy of the actual eye image long-term on centralized servers, according to the project’s stated design goals. Once verified, the user receives a World ID, a portable, privacy-oriented cryptographic credential that can be used to prove “personhood” to other applications without disclosing the user’s actual identity or biometric data. The project has published academic-style documentation describing use of zero-knowledge proofs so that a World ID holder can prove they are a unique, verified human to a third-party app without revealing which specific Orb scan or wallet address corresponds to them.
The companion smartphone app, World App, functions as a wallet and gateway for verified users, allowing them to hold, send, and receive WLD and other digital assets, and to access mini-apps built by outside developers on top of the World ID verification layer. Early participants who completed an Orb scan were often rewarded with a free allocation of WLD tokens as an incentive to bootstrap adoption, a growth strategy reminiscent of earlier airdrop-driven crypto projects. The protocol runs primarily on the Ethereum layer-2 network Optimism to keep transaction costs low, situating Worldcoin within the broader Ethereum scaling ecosystem alongside other major blockchains and payment tokens such as Tether, USD Coin, and XRP that circulate across multiple chains.
WLD was designed with a maximum supply cap widely reported at 10 billion tokens. Distribution was split across several buckets: a large share reserved for humans who verify their personhood via the Orb (distributed gradually over many years to encourage long-term participation), an allocation for Tools for Humanity’s team and investors subject to lock-up and vesting schedules, and a portion earmarked for the Worldcoin Foundation to fund ecosystem development, grants, and operational costs. This structure was intended to front-load network effects — getting as many verified humans onto the network as possible — while gradually decentralizing token ownership and, eventually, governance of the protocol away from the founding company. As with many venture-backed token launches, a meaningful percentage of the supply was initially held by insiders and early backers, a point that has drawn scrutiny from analysts concerned about token unlock schedules and potential sell pressure on the circulating market.
Beyond the core World ID and WLD token, the World ecosystem has sought to position itself as a broader identity layer for the internet. Developers can build “mini-apps” inside World App that leverage World ID for Sybil-resistant use cases such as fair airdrops, one-person-one-vote governance systems, dating and social apps seeking to filter out bots, and financial services wanting to distinguish genuine users from automated fraud rings. The project has also explored partnerships and integrations with other blockchain and identity-related projects, and WLD is listed on major centralized exchanges as well as decentralized venues, giving it liquidity comparable to other mid-cap tokens in the broader cryptocurrency market alongside networks like Solana, BNB, and TRON. As debates around AI-generated content and bot activity intensify, Worldcoin/World Network continues to be cited as one of the most visible attempts to build internet-scale proof-of-personhood infrastructure, even as it remains a subject of ongoing regulatory, ethical, and technical debate.
