Nexo is a centralized crypto-finance platform that lets holders of digital assets borrow cash or stablecoins against their coins as collateral, earn yield on idle crypto and fiat balances, and spend through a crypto-backed payment card, all without having to sell their underlying holdings. NEXO is the platform’s native utility and loyalty token, used to unlock better borrowing terms, higher yields, and a share of the company’s profits. At the time of writing, NEXO has a market capitalization of approximately $892,271,152, ranking it around #85 among all tracked cryptocurrencies, with a price near $0.8922 and roughly $3.68 million in 24-hour trading volume. The project’s official web presence can be found at nexo.com.
The core problem Nexo set out to solve is the “liquidity without liquidation” dilemma faced by long-term holders of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other digital assets: how to access cash for expenses, opportunities, or emergencies without triggering a taxable sale or giving up potential future upside. By pledging crypto as collateral for an instant credit line, users can access liquidity in stablecoins such as Tether or USD Coin, or in traditional fiat currency, while retaining exposure to their original holdings.
Nexo was founded in 2018 in Bulgaria by a team led by Antoni Trenchev, Kosta Kantchev, and Georgi Shulev, entrepreneurs who had previously built Credissimo, a licensed European consumer-lending fintech company. The founders essentially repurposed their experience in traditional collateralized lending and applied it to the emerging asset class of cryptocurrencies, launching Nexo as one of the first “instant crypto credit line” providers at a time when most crypto holders had no easy way to borrow against their coins. The company distributed its NEXO token via an initial token sale in 2018 and structured the business under Nexo Capital Inc., operating internationally with entities and banking partners across Europe and beyond.
Over its first few years, Nexo grew rapidly by marketing itself as the “world’s leading regulated digital assets institution,” emphasizing insurance coverage on custodied assets and partnerships with institutional custodians. It expanded aggressively during the 2020-2021 bull market, adding an interest-earning “Earn” product, a Visa-branded Nexo Card, and services aimed at institutional and high-net-worth clients through “Nexo Prime.”
The platform’s flagship product allows users to deposit supported cryptocurrencies as collateral and instantly draw down a loan in stablecoins or fiat, with the loan-to-value ratio and interest rate determined by the collateral type and by how much NEXO the borrower holds. Because the loan is collateralized rather than requiring a sale, borrowers avoid triggering capital-gains events on their crypto and can repay flexibly, with the collateral released once the debt is settled.
Alongside lending, Nexo has offered an interest-earning account where users deposit cryptocurrencies or stablecoins and receive daily payouts funded by the interest paid by borrowers and by the platform’s other yield-generating activities, and a debit/credit card that draws down a user’s credit line at the point of sale so that everyday purchases can be made without liquidating crypto holdings. The company also runs a mobile app and web dashboard as its primary interface, rather than operating as a public blockchain or smart-contract protocol.
The NEXO token itself was issued initially as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and has since been made available on additional chains, including BNB Chain, giving holders flexibility in how they store and transact with it across exchanges and wallets that support these networks.
NEXO has a fixed maximum supply, with the vast majority of tokens already in circulation, meaning the project does not rely on ongoing inflationary issuance the way many proof-of-stake network tokens do. Instead of new supply being minted to reward validators, Nexo’s economic model is centered on a tiered loyalty system: users who hold larger proportions of their portfolio in NEXO tokens unlock progressively better loan-to-value ratios, lower borrowing rates, higher deposit yields, and cashback on the Nexo Card. Historically the company has also run a token buyback-and-burn style program, using a share of its profits to repurchase NEXO from the open market, which is intended to link token demand to the platform’s underlying business performance rather than to speculative trading alone. This design positions NEXO less like a governance or protocol token and more like a rewards and revenue-sharing instrument tied to a centralized financial services business.
Nexo’s growth has been punctuated by several high-profile regulatory and legal episodes that are central to understanding the project today. During the 2020-2021 period, a number of users experienced frozen withdrawals, and a group of investors later took the company to court in the United Kingdom, arguing they had been unfairly locked out of their funds. The plaintiffs allege that Nexo froze their accounts in 2020-21 after they requested to withdraw their assets from the platform, and a group of investors who claim the crypto lender prevented them from drawing more than $126 million worth of cryptocurrencies filed a lawsuit in the High Court in London.
In January 2023, Nexo’s Bulgarian operations came under direct scrutiny from domestic authorities. On Thursday, 12 Jan 2023, employees of the prosecutor’s office, the Ministry of the Interior, and the State Security Service conducted a special operation at the Bulgarian offices of crypto company Nexo. That same month, U.S. regulators moved against the company’s flagship yield product. In January 2023, the SEC took action against Nexo Capital, Inc., in connection with certain crypto lending products, and Nexo agreed to a substantial fine. Following the U.S. regulatory action, Nexo wound down its Earn product and broader retail operations for American customers, reshaping its business toward markets with clearer regulatory frameworks, particularly across Europe, where it has continued to pursue licensing under evolving frameworks such as the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regime. These episodes remain the most frequently cited risk factors for prospective users evaluating a centralized crypto-lending platform like Nexo, underscoring the counterparty and regulatory risks inherent in custodial crypto finance compared with self-custodied or fully on-chain alternatives.
Nexo positions itself within the broader “CeFi” (centralized finance) segment of the crypto industry, competing with other lending and yield platforms while differentiating itself through its loyalty-tier token model. Collateral accepted on the platform typically spans major assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and stablecoins, and the platform has at various points supported deposits and withdrawals across a range of networks, including TRON-based stablecoin transfers, reflecting the multi-chain nature of modern custodial platforms. The NEXO token itself trades on numerous centralized exchanges, giving it liquidity independent of the core lending and earn products.
Conceptually, Nexo’s crypto-backed credit lines sit alongside a growing category of asset-backed lending products in the wider digital-asset economy, a category that also includes newer tokenized real-world-asset lending instruments such as Figure Heloc, which securitizes home-equity lines of credit on-chain. Ultimately, Nexo represents one of the longer-running attempts to bridge traditional collateralized lending with digital assets, and its token’s value proposition remains closely tied to trust in the company’s centralized operations, its regulatory standing across jurisdictions, and the ongoing size of its loan book and assets under management, rather than to any decentralized protocol mechanics.
