Midnight (ticker: NIGHT) is a privacy-focused blockchain network developed within the Cardano ecosystem and associated with Charles Hoskinson, the co-founder of Ethereum and founder of Cardano. It uses zero-knowledge (ZK) proof technology to let applications verify information without exposing the underlying data. The problem it targets is the trade-off between transparency and privacy on public blockchains: most networks make every transaction and balance visible to everyone, which makes them hard to use for businesses, institutions, and individuals who need confidentiality. Midnight aims to offer “programmable privacy”, where developers choose what stays public and what stays shielded, while data protection and ownership are preserved, in the same space as privacy-oriented assets like Zcash.
As of the latest data, NIGHT has a market capitalization of approximately $816,099,542, ranking it #88 among all cryptocurrencies tracked. Its price sits around $0.04912 per token, with roughly $39,602,458 in 24-hour trading volume and a fully diluted valuation of about $1.18 billion, a gap that reflects the portion of the 24 billion total supply that is not yet in circulation.
Midnight was introduced as a “fourth-generation” blockchain and a privacy-enhancing partner chain to Cardano, developed by Input Output Global (IOG) and later supported by the Midnight Foundation. For a long time the network operated on testnet while the team published its technical papers, developer tooling, and roadmap, which is divided into named phases such as Hilo (token launch), Kūkolu (federated mainnet), Mōhalu (incentivized testnet and growth), and Hua (interoperability).
The project’s defining launch event was the distribution of the NIGHT token. Instead of a traditional presale or venture-led allocation, Midnight ran a multi-phase community distribution called the Glacier Drop, followed by the Scavenger Mine and a Lost-and-Found phase. Eligible holders of assets across several major networks, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Cardano, could claim tokens. According to the project, more than 4.5 billion NIGHT were claimed across the Glacier Drop and Scavenger Mine, reaching millions of addresses.
NIGHT officially launched as a native asset on Cardano in December 2025 and began trading on major exchanges around the same time. Launching on Cardano first gave the token immediate liquidity and access while work on Midnight’s own mainnet continued. Once the mainnet goes live, the NIGHT supply is designed to be mirrored on the Midnight ledger, making it a multi-chain asset.
Midnight combines a public and a private state in a dual-state ledger architecture. Sensitive data stays on the user’s side, and the network verifies zero-knowledge proofs that confirm a computation or claim is valid without revealing the inputs. This lets developers build applications where a user can, for example, prove they meet an eligibility requirement without disclosing their identity or full financial history.
To make this accessible, the project introduced Compact, a TypeScript-based smart contract language that abstracts away much of the cryptographic complexity of ZK development. The goal is for ordinary application developers, not only cryptography specialists, to build privacy-preserving dApps.
Midnight also uses a distinctive two-component token design. NIGHT is the public, unshielded native token used for governance and as a capital asset. DUST is a shielded, non-transferable resource that is generated by holding NIGHT and is spent to pay for transactions and smart contract execution. Because DUST regenerates over time, network usage costs are meant to be predictable and are not tied directly to selling the governance token, while transaction metadata stays protected.
NIGHT has a fixed maximum supply of 24 billion tokens, with roughly 16.6 billion currently circulating. The remaining supply is subject to the redemption (or “thawing”) schedule of the Glacier Drop, in which claimed tokens unlock gradually. According to the project, the thawing period is scheduled to end on December 4, 2026, so token unlocks remain a factor to watch for supply and market sentiment.
A large share of the supply was allocated to community distribution through the Glacier Drop, Scavenger Mine, Lost-and-Found, and a reserve, with the rest reserved for the foundation, development, and ecosystem purposes. Unlike meme-driven tokens, NIGHT’s value proposition rests on its role in a dual-token system: holding NIGHT generates DUST, which powers activity on the network, so demand is expected to be linked to real usage as the ecosystem develops.
Midnight’s ecosystem is closely tied to Cardano, where NIGHT currently exists as a native asset, and it also has a token representation on the BNB Chain, which broadens access for traders. The project focuses on privacy infrastructure rather than general-purpose DeFi: tools for developers, wallet integrations, and early applications that use shielded data for identity, compliance, and confidential finance.
On the trading side, NIGHT is available on major centralized exchanges and is paired with stablecoins such as Tether (USDT), and with the US dollar on some venues, alongside assets like BNB. The community is active on X, Telegram, and Discord, and the project positions itself as a competitor to established privacy coins and an alternative to other smart contract platforms like Ethereum for use cases that require confidentiality.
The project maintains an official website at midnight.network, which serves as the central hub for documentation, token information, roadmap updates, and developer resources.
Midnight (NIGHT) represents one of the most ambitious attempts to bring programmable, zero-knowledge-based privacy to mainstream blockchain development. With a fixed 24 billion token supply, a dual NIGHT and DUST token model, the Compact smart contract language, and strong ties to the Cardano ecosystem, it is positioned as infrastructure for confidential applications rather than as a purely speculative asset. Currently ranked #88 with a market cap near $816 million, its trajectory will depend on mainnet delivery, developer adoption, the pace of token unlocks, and broader sentiment toward privacy-focused cryptocurrencies.
