Circle USYC (ticker: USYC) is a tokenized, yield-bearing digital asset that represents shares in a short-duration institutional fund holding U.S. Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements collateralized by U.S. government securities. Unlike a conventional stablecoin, which is designed to hold a constant $1.00 value, USYC’s price is designed to appreciate gradually over time as the underlying fund accrues interest — which is why the token currently trades at roughly $1.13 rather than exactly $1.00. With a market capitalization of approximately $2,982,978,661, USYC currently ranks around #29 among all tracked digital assets on cryptoteka.io, placing it — by size alone — in the same tier as some far more widely traded coins, even though its purpose and audience are fundamentally different from payment- or smart-contract-oriented assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, BNB, or TRON.
Stablecoins such as Tether and USD Coin solved the problem of price volatility for on-chain dollars, but by design they generally do not pass along the yield earned on their reserves to token holders. As interest rates rose in 2022–2024, institutional and crypto-native treasuries increasingly wanted a way to hold a “cash-equivalent” on-chain asset that actually paid a market rate of return, similar to a money-market fund, without having to leave the blockchain to access traditional finance. USYC was built to close that gap: it lets holders keep dollar-denominated value on-chain while capturing the interest generated by short-term U.S. government securities, and it is structured so the token itself can be moved, transferred, and used as collateral across blockchain networks the same way any other digital asset can.
USYC originates from Hashnote, a digital-asset investment firm that built and managed the fund underlying the token — commonly referred to as the Hashnote Short Duration Yield Fund, a Cayman Islands-domiciled vehicle investing in overnight and short-term reverse repurchase agreements and Treasury bills. Hashnote issued USYC as the on-chain, tokenized representation of shares in that fund, allowing institutional and crypto-native investors to hold and transfer their position digitally rather than through traditional fund administration channels.
The project gained significant industry credibility when USYC was approved as eligible collateral at Cboe Clear Digital, a regulated derivatives clearinghouse, allowing traders to post USYC instead of cash to margin crypto derivatives positions — an early sign that traditional market infrastructure was willing to treat a tokenized Treasury product as “good collateral.” In January 2025, Circle — the company behind USD Coin — announced a definitive agreement to acquire Hashnote, bringing USYC and its underlying fund management infrastructure directly into Circle’s product suite. The acquisition was widely framed as part of Circle’s broader strategy to build out tokenized money-market and Treasury products alongside its stablecoin business, and to offer institutional clients a yield-bearing complement to non-yield-bearing USDC.
Each USYC token corresponds to a claim on the underlying short-duration fund’s assets, which are concentrated in instruments considered very low risk: overnight reverse repurchase agreements backed by U.S. Treasuries and direct holdings of Treasury bills. Rather than distributing yield as separate payments or by increasing the number of tokens a holder owns (a “rebasing” model), USYC uses an appreciating net-asset-value model — the dollar value of a single USYC token rises steadily as the fund earns interest, which is why the token’s price is above parity with the dollar rather than pegged exactly at $1.00.
USYC was not built to live on a single chain. It was issued initially on Ethereum and later extended to additional networks, including Solana, using cross-chain messaging infrastructure that lets the “canonical” token move natively between blockchains rather than relying on wrapped or bridged representations. This multichain design is intended to let institutional users access the same yield-bearing collateral wherever their trading, lending, or settlement activity happens to occur, rather than being confined to one ecosystem.
Following Circle’s acquisition of Hashnote, USYC was integrated more tightly with USD Coin, with mechanisms built to allow near-instant, on-chain conversion between USYC and USDC. This effectively lets a treasury desk or trading firm hold USYC to earn yield during idle periods and switch into USDC on demand for payments, settlement, or trading — combining a yield-bearing Treasury product with the liquidity and interoperability of one of the largest dollar stablecoins.
USYC does not function like a fixed-supply cryptocurrency with a hard cap or a pre-programmed emission schedule. Instead, its supply is elastic and driven entirely by fund flows: new tokens are minted when investors deposit dollars (or eligible collateral) into the underlying fund, and tokens are burned or redeemed when investors withdraw. There is no mining, staking, or block-reward mechanism, since USYC is not a base-layer blockchain asset but a tokenized fund interest. Its “yield” accrues to holders through the appreciating share price rather than through inflationary token issuance, distinguishing it from proof-of-stake reward tokens or governance tokens with fixed supply schedules. This structure places USYC in the same broad category as other tokenized real-world-asset (RWA) products, alongside tokenized Treasury and yield instruments issued by competitors, and conceptually adjacent — though economically different — from other yield-bearing crypto assets such as Lido Staked Ether, where token value or quantity likewise reflects accrued returns on an underlying position.
